ABOUT US
About "Miss Denise" Lawson

My marketing and sales guy has been on me to write a bio. I don’t like writing about myself, so I guess I can just jot down what happened.

I began in this thing, by happenstance. I was not working full-time in print, or on the radio. I was freelancing and enjoying my place on the Hip Hop food chain. But I have come to know God works on us for the good of His own great plan. I know that it was His will that I landed on 103.9 WDKX Radio, in Rochester, New York, under Andre Marcel (Program Director); an on-air personality with no background in broadcasting.

I dubbed my show, “Miss Denise and The Jam Squad,” and broadcast live from the streets. I covered Hip Hop concert tours, album release parties, red carpets and backstage antics. Less than 2 years later, God moved me from freelance writer to Managing Editor of Behind the Scenes Magazine and co-host of its weekly syndicated radio show, “Behind the Scenes Gospel” (in snowy Buffalo, NY). He later opened another door and led me to Gospel Truth Magazine, where I worked as Managing Editor and, later, Editor-At-Large. This enabled me to fellowship with great pastors, artists, producers, and radio talent. I learned about Gospel music from trailblazers like Albertina Walker and Pastor Shirley Caesar and listened to new artists, like Smokie Norful, hope for great things to come. And they did!

In the meantime, I wrote articles and features for various print and online outlets, taking time out for About … Time Magazine and even working as frequent guest editor for NV – the New Vision in Business, in NYC.

So many people asked me, “When are you going to do your own thing?” I never thought I would. But as usual, God has me working, and I am just enjoying the ride, waiting to see where the train is going to stop.

So, while I am on this part of the journey, I wish to look back and thank Andre Marcel, Kerry Douglas, and Tony Johnson for pushing me hard enough so that I would make it happen; they prepared me for anything! I want to thank Jerry Smith (Radio One) and Jeff Grant (Verity) for always having my back. I want to thank Dave Goodson for calling and giving me suggestions that very first day at the BTS. I want to thank Pastor Marvin Sapp for scribbling “This is Your Season,” in my notebook, one day. I want to thank Stacia Hunter, for being a true friend. And I thank Coco Brother for encouraging me to say “yes” to what God has in store for me, to believe, and to do exactly what the Father has told me to do (JESUS' BABY!).
That’s my bio. It hasn’t been about me or what I have done. It has been about the people the Lord has blessed me to know  and the doors HE has enabled me to walk through.  Now, I am walking – in faith – through another one.
